Tech News : Delhi Police Uses Blockchain Technology for Tamper-Proof Forensic Reports

A First in India : Delhi Police Uses Blockchains to Secure its Forensic Reports

New Delhi: Delhi has become the first city of India to use blockchain technology in crime investigation. To ensure evidence collected from a crime scene and sent to the lab for forensics analysis and its report are not tampered with, the Delhi government has introduced blockchain technology in Forensic Science Laboratory.

In order to ensure that the chain of custody (the process by which evidence is handled through its various stages) is not tampered with, blockchain-based interventions have been implemented in four stages.

“When the samples, along with the copy of the FIR and the queries, are received, when the case is assigned to an investigator at FSL, during finalising the report, and when it is dispatched,” said an official.

Moreover, to make a change at any stage, the existing record cannot be altered, and a new block must be created. If there is any attempt to tamper with the record, all authorised persons will be notified immediately.

Previous blockchain use case in FIR

After introducing a new police complaint system that utilises blockchain technology to avoid corruption, the Indian Police has built the country’s first complaints web portal on the Polygon blockchain previous year. The portal allows the general public to file the ‘first information report’ (FIR) and track it in real time. The initiative was taken by famed IPS officer Ashish Tiwari, in the Indian Police Service. Furthermore, with the aid of blockchain, the complaints will remain public and transparent, which does not allow admins or police officers to alter complaints on it.
